Abstract

INVESTIGATION OF THE EAST AND WEST CONFLICT IN NOVELS OF FATIH HARBİYE AND SAATLERİ AYARLAMA ENSTİTÜSÜ

The effects of the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution influenced Europe, and then the whole world. The 19th century is therefore the beginning of an irreversible world order. If we look at our own geography, the Ottoman Empire, which has lagged behind the era in every field, sees Europe as a solution in order to save itself from the disintegration process. An edict called Tanzimat Fermanı is prepared by the bureaucrats who know Europe and the first democratization initiative of the Ottoman Empire has been realized. The right to equal citizenship is granted to minorities, and the ruling class and the people are intended to approach each other. This edict, which brings about the concept of westernization, causes some problems in the society. The physical characteristics of Westernization instead of the intellectual dimension of Westernization led to a number of absurdities and concept conflicts. These issues that affect the society have caused individuals to get stuck between two different civilizations, to experience conflict, to alienate from their environment and even from themselves. Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar criticizes the conflict with absurd elements in his work Saatleri Ayarlama Enstitüsü (1954), while Peyami Safa criticises the situation by his work Fatih Harbiye (1931) with realistic elements and events. In this study, it is aimed to examine the interpretation differences of the concept of Westernization between these two works.
