Abstract


AN INVESTIGATION ON EPIDEICTIC RHETORIC: EXAMPLE OF TANSU ÇILLER

Rhetoric, which is defined as the art of speaking beautiful, is a kind of persuasion. When the concept of rhetoric is considered within the scope of the historical process, it is a concept that is constantly present and that the speakers find necessary to persuade the listeners today. Rhetoric consists of three types; political, judicial and epideic. These types of rhetoric differs in terms of scope, time and result. It is possible to talk about three main concepts in rhetoric: ethos, pathos and logos. Ethos, pathos and logos, also called three proof of persuasion, are more or less included in any conversation. Persuasion is one of the main issues in political communication. This study aims to provide a cross-section on how persuasion elements that are components of rhetoric are used by political leaders. In this study, Turkey's first female prime minister, Tansu Çiller, the 100th anniversary of the Parliament starting from three convincing evidence of the conversation covered include the analysis of discourse we epidiek. The main theme of Çiller's epideictic discourse is national unity and solidarity, women and motherhood. It can be said that logos and pathos persuasion types are mostly used when looking at the discourse.
