Abstract

BEAUTY, UGLINESS AND AESTHETICS OF UGLINESS IN PHILOSOPHY AND ART IN TERMS OF CHANGING SOCIAL VALUES

The concept of aesthetics was associated with the concept of 'mimesis' but in a different context by Plato and Aristotle, the thinkers of Ancient Age. Aristotle, one of the ancient Greek philosophers, based his artistic ideas on the concept of mimesis (mimicking) by focusing on the feeling and understanding in the experience of work of art in his work called Poetika (335 BC), which laid the foundations of modern aesthetics. In aesthetics of Medieval Age, St. Augustinus stated that when the beauty of the human body is taken into consideration, everything is in a numerical order and in place and when the beauty of body movements is taken into consideration, these movements have a timing based on numbers, and emphasized the beauty of order. In the Renaissance period, which was the age of great discoveries and developments, the artists, who had an attitude of reflecting what they saw in an ideal way adopted the concept of "ideal beauty" and associated it with the concept of aesthetics. In Mannerism, the argument of the Renaissance, which was "the one that is esthetic is beautiful, the one that is beautiful is ideally humanist and righteous" was destroyed. Aesthetics, which was represented by grace in Rococo, became an approach dealt with naturalistic reality in Baroque. Then, the Neo-Classical understanding moved in the direction of aesthetics of antiquity, refusing these two aesthetic views. Expressionists presented an aesthetic understanding which was associated with emotional hysteric situations and where the observation of moods were taken as a reference. Thereafter, the one that is esthetic had a large scale, where it was sometimes associated with the one belonging to the nature and sometimes with anti-war propaganda posters, and established a connection with the observer through concepts, and an era where the goal is purely conceptual aesthetics and where the dichotomies of beautiful/ugly, esthetic/anti-aesthetic collapsed and became impossible began.
