Abstract

LAST CHANCE TOURISM AS A TRAVEL MOTIVATIONAL TOOL: THE GREAT BARRIER REEF CASE

Today, many tourism regions and living species in these regions; global warming, climate changes, natural disasters and the unconscious use of natural resources face the danger of extinction for many reasons. Due to all these negative situations, these visits to the tourism regions with the idea that it will not be possible to access in the future have brought the concept called last chance tourism to the tourism literature. In the last chance tourism, also called "disaster tourism" or "doom tourism"; While the idea of not having the opportunity to visit the region again or the desire to see for the last time represents the driving factors that create the motivation of the tourists; These negative situations faced by destinations have almost become the attractive factors of the relevant destinations. Unlike other tourism activities; The fact that the negative situations experienced in the destinations and the features that are undesirable by the tourists created the attraction revealed the extraordinary structure of the last chance tourism and made this concept more interesting. In this study, data on the number of people visiting the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park off the coast of Queensland in North East Australia were discussed. Especially in 2016, it was observed that the interest in the reef, which experienced a great disaster due to climate changes and global warming, increased further. On the other hand, it has been determined that tourists tend to visit intensely with the possibility of not seeing the Great Barrier Reef again.
