On Turkish and Mongolian Military Terms in Munis and Agehi's Firdaws al-Iqbal

Abstract

Firdaws al-Iqbal, which is an important historical work of the Chagatai Turkish, was written by two poets and historians of the period, Shir Muhammed Mirab Munis (1778-1829) and Muhammed Riza Agehi (1809-1874). Munis, started writing Firdaws al-Iqbal, which is about the history of the dynasty, by the order of Iltuzer Khan in 1805. Munis, passed away in 1829 and although a large part of the Firdaws al-Iqbal was written, the unfinished part of the work was completed by his nephew and student Agehi, during the reign of Allah Kulu Khan. Firdaws al-Iqbal, which is about the history of the Khanate of Khiva, is considered one of the most important historical sources written about the history of the Central Asia between 17th-19th centuries.

In this study, Turkish and Mongolian military terms in Firdaws al-Iqbal are analyzed. Most of the military terms identified in Firdaws al-Iqbal, are Turkish, partly Mongolian, Arabic and Persian. This study contains only Turkish and Mongolian military terms. For each identified term, examples are given from Firdaws al-Iqbal’s text.

The identified military terms are evaluated under the headings of military titles, terms related to the arrangement and military order of the army, terms related to the belligerent class in the land forces, weapons and war tools used by the army in war, war tools used for defense and protection, terms used in the meaning of soldier and army, terms used in the meaning of  military encampment and headquarters and other military terms.
