Abstract
Ülkemizdeki birçok yerleşim birimi ismi gibi “Siirt” isminin de kökeni ve anlamı ile ilgili bugüne kadar birçok görüş ortaya atılmış ve bu görüşler doğrultusunda farklı kökenlere dayandırılan bu ismin birbirinden çok farklı anlamlara geldiği ileri sürülmüştür. Ancak halk etimolojisi kapsamında ortaya atılan bu görüşlerin çoğu bilimsel veriler yerine bilimsel izahı mümkün olmayan birtakım benzerliklere dayandırıldığı için kabul görmemiştir.
Bu çalışmada bugüne kadar hakkında pek çok görüş ileri sürülen "Siirt" isminin etimolojik izi sürülmüştür. Bunun için öncelikle Siirt ilinin tarihi ve jeopolitik konumu, bu bölgede hüküm süren uygarlıklar, coğrafi yapısı, geçim kaynakları gibi isminin üzerinde etkili olabilecek özellikleri kısaca özetlenmiştir. Ayrıca bugüne kadar "Siirt" isminin etimolojisiyle ilgili ileri sürülen görüşler değerlendirilerek bu görüşlerin gerçeği yansıtıp yansıtmadığı tartışılmış, eksik ve yanlışları ortaya konmuştur. Daha sonra “Siirt” ismi fonetik ve morfolojik özellikleri bakımından incelenmiş ve bu özelliklerin Sami dillerini işaret ettiği sonucuna varılmıştır. Buradan hareketle tarihî yazılı kaynaklarda geçen bilgiler ve kendisini oluşturan harflerin niteliklerinden hareketle “Siirt” isminin “(mücbir sebeplerle) dağılmışların, savrulmuşların, ortaya saçılmışların yurdu” anlamına gelen Süryanice “ܣܥܶܪܬ (Si‘irt)” isminden geldiği tespit edilmiştir. Böylece uzun yıllardır tartışma konusu olan “Siirt” isminin etimolojisi aydınlatılmış ve şehir isimleriyle ilgili etimoloji çalışmalarına katkıda bulunulmuştur.

Abstract
Like many names of settlements in Turkey, many opinions were put forward about the origin and meaning of the name "Siirt" and in line with these opinions, there was a discussion on this name, which is based on different origins, has very different meanings from each other, However, most of these opinions put forward within the scope of folk etymology were not accepted because they were based on some similarities that could not be explained scientifically instead of scientific data.
In this study, the etymology of the name "Siirt", about which many opinions have been put forward so far, was traced. Firstly, the historical and geopolitical location of Siirt province, the civilizations ruled in this region, its geographical structure, livelihoods, and other features that may have an impact on its name were briefly summarised. In addition, the opinions put forward about the etymology of the name "Siirt" were evaluated and there was a discussion on whether these opinions reflect the truth, and then their deficiencies and mistakes were revealed. Besides, the name "Siirt" was examined in terms of its phonetic and morphological features, and it was concluded that these features indicate Semitic languages. From this point of view, it was determined that the name "Siirt" comes from the Syriac name "ܣܥܶܪܬ (Si'irt)", which means "the home of the scattered (for force majeure)", based on the information in the historical written sources and the letter equivalences that make up it. Thus, the etymology of the name "Siirt", which has been the subject of debate for many years, was clarified and the study is expected to contribute to the etymology studies on city names.
