Abstract
Deri, insanlık tarihi boyunca giyimden barınmaya, sanattan endüstriye kadar pek çok alanda vazgeçilmez bir malzeme olmuştur. Dayanıklılığı, esnekliği ve estetik çekiciliği sayesinde deri ürünleri, yüzyıllardır değerini korumuş ve günümüzde de lüks tüketimden günlük eşya ya kadar pek çok alanda kullanılmaktadır. Ancak, küresel iklim değişikliği, kaynakların tükenmesi ve artan çevre bilinci gibi faktörler, geleneksel üretim süreçlerinin çevresel ve sosyal etkilerini giderek daha fazla sorgulatır hale gelmiştir. Bu bağlamda, deri endüstrisi de sürdürülebilirlik kavramının merkezine yerleşmiş ve bu alanda atılan adımlar, sektörün geleceği açısından kritik bir öneme sahip olmuştur. Günümüzde artan çevresel endişeler ve etik tüketim anlayışı, geleneksel deri üretiminin doğa ve toplum üzerindeki etkileri bilinmektedir. Bu çalışmada amaç, deri endüstrisindeki sürdürülebilirlik kavramının önemini vurgulayarak, bu alandaki çeşitli çalışmaları incelemektir. Geleneksel metotlar ile üretimde; yüksek su tüketimi, kimyasal kullanım, atık sorunları ve karbon ayak izi gibi olumsuz etkiler görüldüğünde, sürdürülebilir üretimin gerekliliği ortaya çıkmaktadır. Çalışmanın temelinde, deri sektöründe sürdürülebilirlik prensiplerini benimseyen ve bu doğrultuda yenilikçi faaliyetler gösteren çeşitli örneklere yer verilmektedir. Ayrıca bazı firmaların sürdürülebilir kaynaklardan elde edilen derileri kullanma çabaları ve bu konudaki sertifikasyon süreçlerine yer verilmiştir. Makale, deri sektörünün geleceğinin sürdürülebilirlik ilkeleriyle şekilleneceği ve bu yöndeki adımların hem doğa hem de ekonomi açısından önemli faydalar sağlayacağı sonucuna ulaşmaktadır.

Abstract
Leather has been an indispensable material in many fields from clothing to shelter, from art to industry throughout human history. Thanks to its durability, flexibility and aesthetic appeal, leather products have maintained their value for centuries and are still used in many areas from luxury consumption to daily goods. However, factors such as global climate change, resource depletion and increasing environmental awareness have increasingly questioned the environmental and social impacts of traditional production processes. In this context, the leather industry has been placed at the centre of the concept of sustainability and the steps taken in this field have become critical for the future of the sector. Today, increasing environmental concerns and ethical consumption understanding, the effects of traditional leather production on nature and society are known. The aim of this study is to emphasise the importance of the concept of sustainability in the leather industry and to examine various studies in this field. When negative effects such as high water consumption, chemical use, waste problems and carbon footprint are observed in production with traditional methods, the necessity of sustainable production emerges. In the basis of the study, various examples that adopt sustainability principles in the leather sector and show innovative activities in this direction are included. In addition, the efforts of some companies to use leathers obtained from sustainable sources and the certification processes in this regard are included. The article analyses the future of the leather sector. The article concludes that the future of the leather industry will be shaped by sustainability principles and that steps in this direction will provide significant benefits for both nature and economy.
